How to protect your dog from heat

Since Midsummer Day, a heat wave has hit Estonia and other countries. The outdoor temperatures reach up to 31 °C. In high heat, it is important to protect your dog and keep them cool. Doglo outlines five tips on how to protect your dog from the heat.

1. Provide shade and water – Make sure your dog has access to shade and plenty of fresh water throughout the day.

2. Plan your walkies – Walk your dog in the early morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. This will reduce their risk of heatstroke. Be particularly careful if your dog is old, overweight or suffers from breathing difficulties.

3. Do the five second tarmac test – Tarmac can get very hot in the sun and could burn your dog’s paws. Check the pavement with your hand before letting your dog walk on it — hold your hand down for five seconds, if it’s too hot for you, then it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

4. Don’t let them get burnt – Keep your dog out of direct sunlight where you can. Use pet-safe sun cream on exposed parts of your dog’s skin, like the tips of their ears and nose.

5. Check ahead for adventures – If you’re planning a day out somewhere, check whether dogs are welcome. Some parks or public places may have different rules for dogs at different times of the year. Always make sure your dog is welcome and does not need to be kept away from entertainment.

Think carefully and plan your trips with your pet in the hot summer weather.

Your dog is very hot in the car. Traveling by car should be planned for cooler times of the day, you should definitely think about a route that would allow you to avoid roadworks or large traffic jams (overheating in the car).

NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN YOUR CAR!

In a very short time, a dog can get a heat stroke in the car when exposed to heat, and in 20 minutes your dog can die in a car sauna! Be mindful – if you notice a dog in an unfamiliar car, call the police! It can save a dog’s life!
